Pag, the
island in north Adria, Croatia, was populated already in Neolithic
considering cultural tracks and necropolis. In older iron era it
will find a home for Illyrian Liburns and first will be mentioned by
Plinije older, then by Konstantin Porfirogenet in the middle of 10th
century. It will be called first Cissa - today´s Caska, then Kissa,
formerly main settlement on the island and the place Novalja
will get a name from a harbour of Kissa, latin navele. But soon, at
the end of 12th century Pag, as smaller hamlet in ancient times
called pagus, takes over a main role on the island. After destroying
in the middle of 15th century it will be built in only 20 years on
the model of Middle Ages Korcula and Dubrovnik. Croats, very
early immediately after immigration in this area, already in 16th
and 17th century come to Pag, and today is possible to come to the
island and Novalja from the heart of Croatia for only few hours by
car or you can arrive flying to neighbouring airport in Zadar. You
access the island from the south side via bridge and from the north
side by ferry-boat
